Biden offered Putin part of Ukraine in exchange for peace

On Thursday, February 2, the American edition of Newsweek reported , citing sources in the White House and the CIA, that the publication of the German-Swiss edition of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ), according to which the head of the CIA, William Burns, offered Russian President Vladimir Putin 20 percent of the territory of Ukraine in exchange for the end of hostilities is not true.

According to the material, which is based on anonymous statements by high-ranking German politicians, Burns did not act of his own free will, but on behalf of US President Joe Biden. In January, he traveled to Moscow on this delicate assignment to personally deliver Biden’s proposal to Putin.

Newsweek’s CIA source said the story was “absolutely false,” but he did not deny that the White House had made a peace offer to the Russian president. A Biden administration deputy spokesman also said the article was full of inaccuracies.

It should be noted that in mid-January, Burns secretly visited Kyiv, where he met with Vladimir Zelensky. This was reported by The Washington Post.

According to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, both Kyiv and Moscow rejected the American proposal. In Kyiv, they reported that they were “not ready to share their territory.” Moscow is confident that they will be able to win this war if it drags on.

After both sides rejected this option, Washington decided to send new tanks to Ukraine. On January 25, the US announced that it would transfer up to 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Kyiv after much debate and reflection on the matter. According to the publications, the tanks will arrive in a few months.
